The history of thermal imaging cameras
The history of thermal imaging technology dates back more than 200 years to the work of German-British astronomer William Herschel. In 1800, Herschel discovered infrared radiation while using a prism to study the visible light spectrum. He found that by placing a thermometer just beyond the red light end of the spectrum, he could detect the existence of an invisible band, which was warmer than any of those in visible light. This invisible band is now known as infrared radiation and lies between visible light and microwave frequencies on the electromagnetic spectrum. In recent years, the mass production of thermal imaging technologies has led to the accessibility of handheld thermographic cameras for various applications such as pest and building inspections.
